TESOL COURSE

The TESOL course is designed to introduce teachers to lesson plans, efficient teaching methods and classroom management.

Our comprehensive 120-hour theoretical and practical skills development course in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) takes place once a month.

The course has three components: home study, intensive classroom-based sessions and observation/teaching practice.  The home study component information will be e-mailed to you once registration and the deposit payment is complete.  The intensive, classroom-based component runs over a week,

CLASS BASED TIMES
First week: Saturday 9 am - 4 pm Monday- Friday 6 pm- 10 pm Saturday 9 am - 4 pm
Second week: Monday - Friday 9 am - 4 pm
Additional hours: Home study/research/assignments

COURSE OVERVIEW
The home study component is assessed on the basis of an assignment. During the intensive, classroom-based component, assessment is continuous and based on participation in group discussions and performance in short, simulated teaching sessions.

The teaching practice component provides the opportunity for self assessment under the guidance of the course facilitator. Final assessment for this component comes from the combined trainee and facilitator session assessments for the week.

Good English Grammar and Teaching books are discussed during the course. A list of recommended books is included in the information package as well as a DVD with TESOL resource materials.
COURSE ASSESSMENT
We require candidates to meet the high standards of the course, and we evaluate course participants in three ways:

  • Course participation Attendance and level of course participation are recorded and assessed by the trainer.
  • Project Candidates are required to submit a lesson planning project, complete an assignment and will receive continual feedback assessment on all tasks
  • Observation and teaching practice
This would take place at our language school, in an authentic teaching environment. This component provides the opportunity for self assessment while teaching, under the guidance of the course facilitator. Assessment is continuous during the practical sessions. Course participants who receive positive feedback and assessments on all three points will receive a certificate indicating a grading of the candidate's performance in each area.  When a candidate does not meet the criteria or is struggling in any area of assessment, the course trainer will assist with further input and practice. Modules may need to be redone or additional practice will be arranged. As the course trainer works closely with all participants and monitors each participant's progress from the beginning, there is plenty of time to work on any areas needing improving.

Testimonial

  • Studying TBE with Norman has been a rewarding experience. A dedicated English professor with a wealth of knowledge and experience, Norman was always available to explain, clarify, highlight, and illustrate concepts and answer queries promptly and thoroughly. I have successfully completed my studies, and am very pleased with the course and my performance. My performance and the confidence with which I completed TBE is only a reflection of the dedication Norman gives his students.
